Rainbow Stars – A Bright Sensory Activity for Kids

My 3 year old has really loved playing in his sensory box full of rainbow rice lately. So, when I saw a box of cute little pasta stars, called Stelline, at the grocery store, I knew exactly what to do with them.

I purchased two boxes and dyed them 6 different colors using a few squirts of hand sanitizer and Sax Liquid Watercolors (Link to instructions at end of post). I love how the water colors make the pasta so vibrant and full of color.

To present the activity to J, I laid each color out in row in our sensory box. Then, I let him decide what to do with them.

Of course, it turned into a construction site.

Not only did the construction site make for a fun small world play, but it’s also great for sensory play and working on fine motor skills.

Soon though, the stars reminded him of his brother’s cupcakes from his birthday. They were blue and topped with rainbow colored star sprinkles.

So, J wanted to make cupcakes.

Instead of making real cupcakes, I suggested using play dough.

I’m kind of in love with his cupcakes. He made them look so much like the real ones we made, I was quite impressed.

I’ve bagged up our rainbow stars and have brought them out a few more times since then. Every time, he finds a new way to play with them. They are so versatile and still so vibrant!
